Between the Bushes, Snatches whatever you want to call them...

Get away day for the ladies this week. Nah and Shannon feeling the stress of day to day and me just wanting to get away from it all decided to have our Fur Traitors meeting on the beach. A few of our loyal members couldn't make it, one having been poisoned, the others cruelly made to stay home and clean for their respective husbands and ex husbands. Too bad for them! We tossed the PB & J sandwiches out the window and headed for the beautiful Cape Split beach for an afternoon of relaxation and food. We set off for a little place tucked in behind the pretty is somewhat abandoned looking town of Canning to a restaurant set amid fields of blueberries called Between the Bushes. We arrived ten minutes before lunch service started, noted the vegetarian options and decided to stay and poked around the grounds as we waited, which were quite lovely although stinky from the large amounts of lilies decorating the main path. A bus pulled up to the front of the building unloading what I thought could only be tourists, arms laden with boxes of fresh picked blueberries. Turns out the offer a shuffle service for the large and lazy to transport you over the vast acreage whilst you pillage their bushes. Not a bad idea in this heat really...The weather started out promisingly enough with gray clouds and a cool breeze but the sun poked its head out just as we were sitting down to order on the outdoor patio. A water boy who was a little too eager with his pitcher serviced us at least 5 times during the meal and our waitress while friendly never came back after the initial order taking, forgot our appetizer and checked up on us when we were done our meal...good thing we enjoyed what we had. Our liquor ordered, G & T, red wine..guess who... and a Long Island Iced Tea we set upon the entrees. Nah went with the Potato Lasagna, which was boasted as vegetarian and gluten free by the little menu symbols, Shannon went with the Greek Wrap and Side Salad also vegetarian and myself the vegetable Stir Fry with Schezwan sauce. We also ordered Sweet Potato Wedges as an appetizer but they never came. They all arrived quickly and we tucked in after a quick "chin chin colin", Nah's cheers of choice. It was quickly decided that the lasagna was the best of the 3. Potato, sweet potato, a cheese we think may have been Monetery Jack, rosemary, tomato and a lentil sauce was delightful and was also accompanied by a blueberry apple chutney and red pepper jelly, though not needed for this dish. Topping the potatoes was a medley of green pepper, red pepper, onion and carrot and the green pepper was scooped to the side. Both Nahleen and I do not enjoy the green pepper. My dish was disappointing with not spicy sweet Shezwan sauce but more of a teriyaki and the white and wild rice was cooked nicely though adorned with too many of the above mentioned vegetables and a few mushrooms thrown in. Also on the side was that chutney which definitely had more flavour than my stir fry sauce. Shannon's wrap was a puzzlement as to what the Greek flavour was and could only be decided as oregano in the mayo. Her salad was beautiful full of vegetables and leaf lettuces and a smattering of blueberries with a blueberry poppy seed dressing. The side of her plate was decorated with orange slices layered upon pickle slices that we all thought was kind of gross. The patio was quickly filling up as we were about halfway through our meal when a sound like fireworks erupted a few tables over and shrieks were heard all around. A man is employed to set off these explosives when the birds prove to be too numerous and in turn this startling noise makes diners pee their pants and babies scream, something the waitress could have mentioned.I should also mention that this is the first time I've ever seen Nahleen eat all the food on her plate. There is usually more than enough left for Mr. Manners, bread or pizza crust and a small pile pushed to the corner of the plate that I am usually tempted to spear with my fork. Dessert menu was brought round and as I decided I wouldn't share my Chocolate Brownie Euphoria, Nah and Shan shared the German Cheesecake with Blueberries. The cheesecake was by far the winner and my brownie was easily shared as I am not a fan of the fudgey...or undercooked...brownie but the real whip cream and creme anglaise were very good. All in all a decent meal, nothing as was noted, that we couldn't make at home and we left pleasantly full. The walk on the beach that afternoon was even nicer.
